Mopar Car Of The Month
for December 2012:
I have owned my Savoy for a little over 4
years. It is a low optioned original 426 street wedge car and #3 in VIN
sequence of 9 Savoy 2dr post cars built for the 1964 model year in the
Chrysler Registry (now called Galen's Registry I believe). The car was
originally delivered to Normandin Chrysler Plymouth in San Jose, CA and
remained in CA until it was purchased by a Woodinville, WA man in 1984.
The car was repainted at that time and the interior re-upholstered in a
70's style black vinyl/blue velour combination. Originally a manual
steering manual drum brake car, the front brakes were upgraded to disks
with a dual master cylinder back in 84. They are still manual as is the
steering. Original miles are unknown, but just over 8,000 miles were
accumulated between 1984 and 2008 when I purchased the car from his
Estate. Except for the hood (a spare - original in my shop), the car
retains 100% of it's original sheet metal.
Current engine is a Dennis Smyth built 426 wedge with all forged
internals, ported 516 closed chamber heads with larger intake valves,
crane flat tappet cam, Edelbrock RPM intake and 870 CMF HOlley Street
Avenger carb. Ignition is Mopar Performance electronic with an MSD6A CD
box. Exhaust is 2" TTI headers with 3 1/2" collector, Magnaflow mufflers
with 3" TTI/custom piping all the way back. I also incorporated a set of
3" QTP electric cutouts for the occasional trip down the 1320. Trans is
Pat Blais built 727 with original push button shift.
The car is currently undergoing a transformation that will include a new
426 Wedge (also built by Dennis), that will incorporate forged
internals, a custom ground solid lifter roller cam, roller rockers, 516
heads with significant port work and larger intake and exhaust valves,
Indy dual plane intake and a much massaged 780 Holley 4150. The original
727 is being replaced by a 64 date coded A-833 4-speed with McLeod
hydraulic clutch set-up. The rear suspension has been upgraded with
Calvert Racing mono-leaf springs, Rancho adjustable shocks and Caltrac
traction bars. Custom subframe connectors and a Lakewood driveshaft loop
have been installed by K&K Motorsports of Lynwood, WA. Firm Feel tubular
upper control arms and a complete front end rebuild will also be
accomplished during the transition.
The current engine will be removed in the next few weeks and the engine
compartment treated to a new paint job. The engine bay will also get new
engine/lighting wiring courtesy of Bill Evans.
