My 1991 Dodge Spirit R/T
Here
are a few pics of my new car. The car is a 91 R/T with 101k on it, is
very clean inside and out. The car pulls very hard and my best so far is
14.01@94.94mph at Rock Falls
Raceway. I have 3" convertor back exhaust with a Dynomax Race
Magnum muffler (sounds great and helped flow a lot), K+N air filter, and
Magnecore wires, otherwise bone stock. The car is quicker than 14.01, I
let off in the top of 3rd because the computer pulled timing and boost
back, I thought because of detonation. Watch the site and the mailing
lists to see how well I do in the future.
Still wondering what this thing is?
Here's a little info and a few links. In 1991 Dodge decided to go all
out in the econobox way. A DOHC 2.2 intercooled turbo, head designed by
Lotus, distributorless ignition, 5-spd only, and a lightweight sleeper
car, the Spirit all add up to a pony car whoopin machine. With 224hp and
217lb ft of torque the Spirit R/T could rip off 1/4 mile times of 14.5@97mph
and top out well over 140mph. Scary thing about this is that in 1991
there were but a handful of sports cars let alone family sedans that
could outperform or even keep up with the R/T.
The
$60,000 BMW M5 couldn't even match the R/T. The cars had 7 year/70,000
mile warranties, which actually bit Chrysler hard, almost every car of
the 1208 made in 1991 and the 191 made in 1992 needed there heads
replaced, they put steel frost plugs in an aluminum head. These cars
ended up to be very expensive for upkeep and were in the shop a lot,
especially since it was all warranty work they were brought in for the
littlest things. If taken care of nicely and kept clean these cars will
last forever. If you ever run up against one of these, you'd better
watch out. Lucky for you these are a rare machine!
